Official World Golf Ranking Announces Updated Points Allocation for No-Cut Events

The Official World Golf Ranking is making some significant adjustments ahead of the new year.

On Thursday the governing board of the OWGR announced two points distribution updates, one pertaining to no-cut events and the other to players who win multiple times in one season.

For fields consisting of 80 players or less, top finishers will receive a greater percentage of the points. Additionally, if those 80-player events do not have a cut, the bottom 15% of finishers will receive no points. So, in an 80-player field with no cut, the bottom 12 finishers would not receive world ranking points for their performance.

The change comes ahead of the PGA Tour’s implementation of several no-cut “signature” events in 2024. Next season, the following events will have limited fields and no cut: The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship and Travelers Championship, in addition to the three FedEx Cup playoff events.

However, the OWGR noted that “playoff” series events will continue to distribute points to the entire field. That includes the FedEx Cup playoffs and the DP World Tour Championship.

At Tiger Woods’s Hero World Challenge, for example, the bottom three finishers of the 20-person field would not receive world ranking points. This year, that would have included Woods, who finished 18th and received 2.4 points for his performance, causing him to jump 430 places in the rankings. On the other hand, Scottie Scheffler, the winner of the 2023 Hero World Challenge, would receive a greater allocation of points.

Multiple-time winners will now be awarded with a sizable bonus in points distribution. Players who win twice in one season will receive a 60% points bonus, while players who win three or more times will receive a 70% boost. Scheffler’s Hero World Challenge victory was his third of the year.

“Based on extensive analysis following the changes implemented in August 2022, we recognized these two opportunities to further enhance the OWGR and to accurately evaluate performances of the world’s participating players on all eligible Tours,” said Peter Dawson, Official World Golf Ranking chairman. “Adjustments to the Ranking are made after careful consideration, and we are confident that today’s updates will better position the OWGR for the future.”
